The Cleveland Browns acquired Brock Osweiler on Thursday, but if the reports are true, they will still make a play for Jimmy Garoppolo.
Dustin Fox is fine with that.
“I want Garoppolo big time,” Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan host said on CBS Sports Radio’s Gio and Jones. “I’ve been talking about this since during the season. I think this is the direction the Browns should be going. I like that they’re trying to get it done. At least it appears they’re trying to get it done. I don’t know if the Patriots are willing to part with Jimmy, but we’ll see. This is like a soap opera, man. You can’t take your eyes off Twitter for five seconds because something is going to happen.”
The Browns acquired Osweiler, not to mention a 2017 sixth-round pick and a 2018 second-round pick, in exchange for a 2017 fourth-round pick. Cleveland will also assume Osweiler’s $16 million salary.
“Because the Browns had so much money, they were willing to basically buy a second-round pick for next season,” Fox said, “and by all accounts, it appears that they’re just trying to stockpile draft picks to either move up in the draft or go after Jimmy Garoppolo. So the move to trade for Osweiler, I believe, is to actually help them get a quarterback (who is) not Brock Osweiler.”
Fox said he would trade two first-round picks or the No. 1 overall pick to acquire Garoppolo.
“Yeah, I’m fine with it because the Browns don’t have a quarterback,” Fox said. “I think Jimmy is that good based off of what I’ve seen and who I’ve talked to around the league. I’m very confident that he’s a guy that could be a quarterback.”
Garoppolo, 25, was a second-round pick in 2014. Last year, he completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 502 yards and four touchdowns. He is yet to throw an interception in 94 career pass attempts.
“I’ve seen enough to know that the guy can play in the league, and I trust the people that I talk to that the guy is basically an offensive coordinator,” Fox said. “He knows everything that’s going on, as opposed to drafting Deshaun Watson or Mitch Trubisky a guy who’s played zero snaps in the NFL, absolutely. The Browns have to stop jerking around with these draft picks and just go out and make a move for a guy who can play and is a veteran in this league. This isn’t Ryan Mallett. This isn’t Brian Hoyer. This is a much more talented quarterback than those guys. I hate that Patriots-backup comparison when people bring that up. I think Garoppolo is really good.”
This isn’t a recent phenomenon, either.
“I loved Garoppolo coming out of Eastern Illinois,” Fox said. “I was huge on him and Derek Carr both in that draft when they were coming out, and they both go in the second round. This is the highest draft pick Belichick’s ever had for a quarterback. There’s something they see in this kid, and I see the same thing. So I’m convinced. You can’t convince me otherwise. I’m going to fight for this guy until the Browns get it done. If it doesn’t pan out, then I have egg on my face. But I think he’s really good.”
