Dana White: Media Knows Nothing About My Business

In his Twitter lifetime, UFC president Dana White has fired off nearly 33,0000 tweets to nearly four million followers. Not every tweet, of course, was received positively by every follower – or by every troll who came across it in the Twittersphere. So, on occasion, White will spar with folks on social media.

In that regard, he’s just like everyone else.

“Listen, I like to engage with social media,” White said in-studio on CBS Sports Radio’s Gio and Jones. “You got a lot of people. You got to take the good with the bad. I like all of it. I like the negativity. I like the positivity. You can’t expect to go on social media and everybody love you and everybody say positive things. The difference between me and everybody else is I’ll give it back to you and I don’t care. I don’t care if the media writes stories about me. I could care less.”

In fact, White often sees negativity as a positive. He likes proving people wrong.

“I liked it from day one,” White said. “It fuels me and it fires me up. I love people telling me you can’t do this and you can’t do that. There’s more negativity from the media than there is from Twitter or anywhere else. Some of the stories that are written on our business are hilarious, if you go back over the last 10 years. These guys who have never built anything, nobody ever depended on a paycheck from them – they have all this input on your business and where it’s going and what they think you’re doing wrong. It’s hilarious.”

White knows that this phenomenon – being critiqued by the media – isn’t unique to him.

“I don’t think I’ve been a victim of it. I think that everybody is,” he said. “I think that they do the same thing with the NBA. They do the same thing with the NFL and everything else. The difference is the media knows nothing about my business. What I’m doing has never been done before.”
