After hauling in a 26-yard touchdown pass to give the Pittsburgh Steelers a 24-6 lead in their season-opening 38-16 win over the Washington Redskins on Monday, Antonio Brown spread his legs, put his hands on his knees and did a little thrusting. Brown, who finished with eight catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns, was immediately flagged for his celebration.
As it turns out, he was also fined – either $9,115 (taunting) or $12,154 (unsportsmanlike conduct toward an opponent).
Either way, Bart Scott thinks it’s ridiculous.
“Man, that is the stupidest fine I’ve ever seen in my life,” The NFL on CBS analyst said on CBS Sports Radio’s Gio and Jones. “I can’t believe a guy just put his butt out and twerked a little bit (and got fined). That’s like giving (Warren) Sapp a fine for the Beyonce. Come on, man. The NFL is a joke with that crap. That’s just beyond ridiculous. He put his hands on his knees and he twerked and he moved his butt. . . . Come on, man. I remember T-Sizzle (Terrell Suggs) doing the punt thing where they put their hands in front like they’re banging it out. That got nothing.”
Brown was also fined for wearing blue cleats – either $6,076 (equipment violation) or $9,115 (foreign substance on body or uniform).
That’s bad enough. But a fine for a short little dance?
“That is a joke, man,” Scott said. ‘That’s a fine and a 15-yard penalty? Come on, man. I’ve watched (Travis) Kelce do the Nae Nae. I’ve watched him do every popular dance. Twerking is a popular dance in the urban community. He did a little twerk, bang-bang, Dancing with the Stars, he hit it two times. It wasn’t like he was on the ground humping. Come on, man. He hit the bang-bang. The twerk is a popular dance.”
