For several years, with Tiger Woods struggling, The PGA Tour seemed weak, naked, devoid of true greatness.
That is no longer the case.
“Well, the talent is extremely deep,” PGA Tour golfer Hunter Mahan said on CBS Sports Radio’s Gio and Jones. “It seems like it’s hard to figure out who the best player in the world is right now. For so long, we really had these big stretches of guys like Nick Price and Faldo and Norman and then Tiger– we always seemed to know who the best player was. Nowadays you have to look at it from four-week increments and go, ‘This is the best guy in the world. This is the best guy in the world.’ It just seems that Jason Day and DJ (Dustin Johnson) and Rory and Jordan – there’s just a lot of guys who have incredible games and are playing really well.”
All four of those golfers have won at least one major and finished in the top five of at least one other major in the last three years.
“I think the Tour is in great shape,” Mahan said. “I think it’s global with all the guys we have up on top. I don’t think there’s one guy out there who’s kind of setting the bar for everybody, but Jason Day had a great, unbelievable six-month stretch. Then DJ wins two tournaments – the U.S. Open, a major, and the WGC, which is the best players in the world. It’s hard to ignore those wins. I think it’s incredible because each week you know you’re going to get great golf, but you really don’t know who’s going to win. I think all the guys up there are very motivated and really want to be the No. 1 player in the world.”
